Halloween at My House

If you caught my Halloween post a couple weeks back, you'll know we go a bit nuts when it comes to the decorations at our house. (Hey, I'm a production designer...what good would I be if I didn't go all out on Halloween?)

Here's what you see through our living room window, as you walk up the path to the front door.

Here are a few pictures of our graveyard, and the car crash we staged. That's right... we staged an accident on our front lawn. No, we didn't destroy our fence just for Halloween. The fence was rotten and falling down, so we though, as long as we're getting rid of it, we might as well put it to good use. We actually fooled a number of people who thought the wreck was real:)

Amazing, this is why I want to be a production designer.

Paul, this is crazy good! How did you make the girl trick?
I bet your neighbors don't get bored with you around.

Paul Lasaine said...

The girl is an old stage trick called Pepper's Ghost. It’s actually a live composite. An image off to the side (the ghost), is reflected in a large piece of glass, set at a 45 degree angle, between the viewer and the scene. The result is a “double exposure” of the scene with the ghost composited into it.

No our neighbors don't get bored...at least not around Halloween. We try to raise the bar each year, and our poor neighbors are stuck doing their best to survive the onslaught of Trick-or-Treaters. We got upwards of a thousand kids this year:o Yes, the candy bill gets expensive!

Thankfully, our neighbors don't seem to mind...at least they say they dont:)

Actually, if your looking for candy, my house is definitely NOT the place to go. We get so many kids...we have to ration:o

SO good! If it didn't only happen once a year, I'd say you should be a professional Halloween house decorator!

I have been coming back to this post for almost a year now since my husband linked it over for me to see. We get really into Halloween here too. We love the Pepper's Ghost trick. We've got a front room window like yours and have been planning to use that same trick, but of the two of us dancing around this Halloween in the 17th century costumes I sewed for us last year. It might be biting off more than we can chew. My husband is an animator and has some tricks up his sleeve and wants to make it look like we twirl up in the air. I really don't know if we'll be able to pull it off this year. Seems like there could be a lot of glitches. Would you mind terribly if we can't get it to work if we do a similar thing as you with a piano playing ghost? We've got a piano in that room too. I wouldn't want to use your exact same idea without your permission. Hopefully our dancing idea will work, but thought I'd check in case. My email is kiazi44@hotmail.com Thanks!

Paul,
I too am amazed by your piano ghost. I know everyone keeps asking "How'd you do it?". But you said a "live composite", did you mean the actress is really off the the side or do you have just a video of her? If it's a video - is it projected onto a screen or is it just a large TV?
Please tell so we can have as much fun as you. Assuming it's a video, what type of program did you use to render the green halo effect? Thanks,
Bill

By the way, I would be glad to help with the candy fund this year for a copy of the piano girl video. You name the price.
Thanks again,
Bill

Paul Lasaine said...

William,

It's a video projection...but you could do it with a live person. I've considered trying that, but I keep the effect running for a few days around Halloween time...several hours a night. I don't think SAG would be too happy about that.

As for the glow: a buddy did it for me...post video effect. I'm not sure what he did.
